‘Watch the Throne’ Rules the Charts, Sets Billboard Record
Did you expect anything less? The Throne’s Watch The Throne LP has entered the Billboard 200 at #1 and although it failed to meet initial sales projections, it earned the duo a place in the history books.
The album sold a staggering 436k copies since being released on August 8th, barely missing initial 500k sales predictions made last week. It’s now 2011′s second largest opener behind Lady GaGa’s Born This Way which moved 1.1 million in May. And with sales exceeding 321k at digital retailers, Watch The Throne has the second largest first week digital sales behind Born‘s 662k.
Watch The Throne did manage to outshine GaGa in some way. It accumulated over 290k from iTunes alone and is now the platform’s biggest first-week seller, shattering the 282k sales mark of the former record holder, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends.
Additionally, the LP has now earned Jay-Z his 12th No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, further extending his lead ahead of all artists since breaking Elvis’ 10-album record with 2009′s The Blueprint 3.
