Roc Style with Tichina Arnold

What's the Word

Welcome to another episode of Roc4Life’s Roc Style. Roc Style is a series of interviews with entertainers and trendsetters where we discuss fashion, personal brand and, of course, Rocawear’s influence on their style.

She’s sweet, funny, and full of light. That’s what Roc4Life’s fashion scribe, Rae Holliday, learned about Tichina Arnold when he stopped by to watch her on the set of her Pynkmagazine photo shoot. Or was Rae witnessing one of Arnold’s scintillating performances?

Arnold is an award-winning actress with stints on Martin, Soul Food, and Everybody Hates Chris. Fellow Adult Swim faithfuls will also remember her as the voice of “cutie-pie” Nicole on The Boondocks.

Arnold, a divorcée and a single mother, recently added another feather to her well-decorated hat — the role of Judi Mann on the TV Land sitcom, Happily Divorced. She plays Fran Drescher’s best friend on the comedy based on Drescher’s relationship with her ex, Peter Jacobson (the show’s co-creator), who announced he was gay after 17 years of marriage. The show just got picked up for a second season with a new batch premiering on March 7th.

So what’s next for Tichina Arnold? We caught up with the Queens native to talk fashion, style, and life.

On personal style: “I’m a little bit of everything. I love to be inspired by other people. I love looking at other women (and men, actually) to be inspired by what they’re wearing. I love colors. I love palettes.”

On style and creativity:“Style is the opposite of trend. Creativity comes from within. I think we all possess creativity. But…you gotta stay away from the trends. Trends is what other people think — they’re telling you what it is. Trend is whatever I want it to be.

On Happily Divorced: “It’s based upon something that’s very real, very true. Hopefully we’ll be around for four more seasons.”
