What Roc4Life is Thankful for in 2012

What's the Word

Thanksgiving Day is a time for reflection and community and gratitude. So we asked our Roc4Life crew to tell us what they’re thankful for this year. See how they responded below and let us know what you’re thankful for in the comment section.

“I’m thankful for so many things! I’m not even sure where to start, but here’s an excellent attempt: I’m thankful that harem pants have disappeared; denim and leather have returned; “R&B divas” brought Keke Wyatt back from the dead; Brandy Norwood made a comeback; and I’m most thankful for the birth of our savior and fearless leader, Blue Ivy Carter, who has in turn appointed President Barack Obama as the leader of our country for a second term! #GodIsGood” – Rae Holliday

“I am thankful for friends and family that keep me sane and accept me for who I am. I am also thankful for artists that have accepted and embraced social media, since without them I wouldn’t have a job lol.” – Aura Harewood

“This year I have to give thanks to those artists across multiple genres who make me want to go out and spend money on their albums while many folks choose to illegally download. The music industry is what puts a roof over my head and puts clothes on my back, so it is important to support those artists who deliver the albums worth spending money on. With that being said, I have to thank Kendrick Lamar, Lana del Rey, the Weeknd, Emeli Sande, Frank Ocean, Azealia Banks, Killer Mike, fun, The Alchemist, Maverick Sabre, Jake Bugg and the countless others who have made their way into my CD collection with their musical offerings this year. Happy thanksgiving folks..you got to give to get.” – Melanie J. Cornish

I’ll never forget what Jay-Z told ?uestlove six years ago. ?uest was worried that the Roots’ Def Jam debut, Game Theory, lacked commercial appeal. So he relayed his fears about the marketplace to then label boss, Jay-Z. Hov’s response? “The marketplace will take care of itself.” This year, I’m thankful for all the artists who said to themselves, “The marketplace will take care of itself.” I’m thankful for the likes of Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and everyone else who made enduring music in an industry that urges compromise. I’m thankful for the gift of music, which has been therapeutic in an incredibly difficult year. Above all, I’m thankful for the unconditional love of friends and family. Happy Thanksgiving Day all. – Rizoh
