Video: Steve Stoute Speaks on Making Money in the Music Industry Without Selling Records

Steve Stoute, the COO of Translation Marketing, (Jay-Z is the CEO) is a man that is responsible for brokering some of the most lucrative, highly publicized deals in hip hop to date. Throughout his career, he has also worked with several Fortune 500 companies to help them appeal to the urban youth market.

Check out this interesting video of him speaking on the Planet Hip Hop Wall Street Journal panel about the importance of branding yourself in the music industry and making money outside of record sales.

The point that Steve addressed about creating capital around the record sales was the absolute truth. With all the web leaks on music ingeneral, you have to look for different outlets to survive in this industry, especially if your independent. Believe it or not, my logo generates alot of the growth of the companies assets. It catches the eye of our minorities and peers around. People can relate and attract a sense of comfort with just a visual. Establishing your own brand will carry you a long way. It's been times where I had a performance, didn't get paid to do it. Without a CD in my possession, had 40 t-shirts at $25 a pop, logo small print on front, big print on back and was able to sell all in one night. Remember, I did the show for free and no CD copies pressed up. I would have sold my album for say, 1 for 10, 2 for 15, or 3 for 20 depending on the atmosphere. People were more intreged on spending that extra dollar because I gave people a voice that they could wear instead of just listening to on the way home. Thats when I realized that it's so much more to the game and I still look at the industry on a whole different aspect than before. there is plenty of money surrounding hip hop music. like stoute said it is about promoting and doing it well. what people see is what they get or want to get. its about planting a classy or stylish image in there minds. something for them to feel good about. i like his mindset. stoute is very intelligent. jay made a good choice when he decided to partner with stoute in marketing. now jay can say," that marketing plan was me and stouts!" lol.
