New Orleans is the place to be this weekend. NBA All-Star 2017 Weekend kicks off today. There are a ton of events, concerts, pop-up shops, and contests to commemorate the festivities. All of these events lead up to the big game on Sunday which promises to be a good one. After some adjustments, the teams have been finalized and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Watching the East vs. West showdown on Sunday is not the only event that matters. We went through the list and picked out some of the coolest things to see. If you are not in New Orleans it’s okay, these situations will be televised. Just make sure to tune in so that you don’t miss it.
The All-Star Celebrity game happens Friday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN. For the East, Jemele Hill will be coaching with the help of rapper Fat Joe and the Raptors own Kyle Lowry. The team is packed with 2 solid Point Guards (Jason Williams and Lindsay Whalen, Brazilian baller Oscar Schmidt, Nick Cannon, Ansel Elgort, and New York’s own Peter Rosenberg. For the West, Jemele’s ESPN other half Michael Smith will be coaching. He will get assistance from none other than Draymond Green and veteran 106 and park host Rocsi Diaz. The West is a high-profile team with the likes of Mark Cuban, Master P, and his son Romeo Miller. Those three alone could beat the East but they will have help. Baron Davis, Candace Parker, Miles Brown, and Anthony Mackie are just a few of the other members of the squad.
The JBL Three-Point Contest and the Taco Bell Skills contest is happening on Saturday as well. Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry, and Kemba Walker are just a few of the athletes competing. They will battle it out for the top 3-point player spot. They are lucky Steph Curry isn’t in the mix because we all know how that would turn out…
The Dunk Contest is always exciting. This year, Derrick Jones Jr., Aaron Gordon, Glenn Robinson III, and DeAndre Jordan are looking to turn things up on the court. Aaron Gordon and Derrick Jones Jr. are the favorites but there’s no telling what kind of bounce the fellas will bring that night. The Slam Dunk Contest airs Saturday, Feb. 18th at 8 p.m. on TNT.
The Roots aren’t playing but they are bringing their talents to the game. They tapped the skills of Hamilton star Daveed Diggs, Michael B. Jordan, Jidenna, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and DMC to put on a basketball musical during Sunday night’s game. The musical, The Evolution of Greatness, is a historical journey through basketball from the 1950s to the current times. The performance will air on Sunday during the All-Star Game on TNT at 8 p.m.
Oh and Carmelo Anthony is replacing Kevin Love for the big game. Shout out to the New York Knicks.
Be sure to tune in to all of these events so you don’t miss any of the action as it happens. Watching the highlights isn’t as fun as watching it as it happens. Check here for additional information and air times.
