If there’s one thing we can thank Bill Cosby for, it’s the steady flow of quality TV shows. He made college the thing to do back in the early 90’s with his introduction of The Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World. Everybody watched Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) go off to Hillman college and that immediately set the tone for students around the globe. Even though Hillman was a fictional educational institution, it made college life something to look forward to. This was impactful for Black communities nationwide and legit made people want to go to college. It looks like the ABC hit series Black-ish might be on track to do the same thing.
We heard that ABC is working diligently to create a ‘Black-ish’ spinoff that would spotlight the eldest Johnson, Zoey (Yara Shahidi), and her college experience. Show creator Kenya Barris is definitely on to something if he makes this happen. We haven’t seen anything like this in a minute and it will definitely peak interest in higher education and college life. We recently saw Zoey at her college orientation weekend. If that’s any indication of what’s to come, it may be a definite winner.
While it is too early to tell, we have to remember the Shahidi is real-life college bound. She could potentially be a co-creator or help write the story line. Maybe, we’ll see Michelle Obama as a guest (because they’re cool) or Malia Obama as a classmate or something. It will be a breath of fresh air to see a young Black woman doing her thing at school and showing other young women that this is the ‘cool thing to do’.
Could Zoey be the next generation Denise Huxtable?
Check for Black-ish, Wednesday nights @ 9:30 PM on ABC. Let’s hope they get this pilot in order. Given the political climate of the world today, this kind of televised message is key to the youth.
