Toys play an important role in a child’s life when growing up. Dolls are a popular item when it comes to children and living out life through creative play. Mattel launched the Barbie collection back in 1959 and it has been a constant fixture in children’s lives ever since. In an effort to appeal to their entire customer base, Mattel frequently launches new Barbie dolls. Their most recent addition is the Ibtihaj Muhammad Barbie doll which pays homage to the famed U.S. Olympic fencer. She is the first U.S. Olympic athlete to compete wearing her hijab during competition at the Rio games. The doll was debuted at the Glamour Celebrates 2017 Women of the Year Live Summit in New York City.

The importance of having a doll that relates to a person’s everyday life is priceless. Muhammad made history when she as the first woman to compete with her hijab. She represents a large population of women and girls who wear their hijab daily. This Shero Barbie doll joins a very special collection of dolls that represent women who inspire a specific group of women. Ashley Graham, Misty Copeland, and Ava Duvernay are also women who have had Barbie dolls created to represent them.
